Today's Panchang & Choghadiya

Tithi, Nakshatra and auspicious time slots for your city.

What is Panchang and what do today's timings tell you?

Panchang means 'five limbs': Tithi (lunar day), Vaar (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga and Karana. Together they describe a day in the Vedic calendar. This free tool computes all five for any date and city, plus sunrise and sunset, the eight Choghadiya slots and the planetary Hora hours. Because Choghadiya and Hora are derived from local sunrise and sunset, they shift with your location, so the timings are calculated for the city you select rather than a national average.

How Panchang is calculated

Tithi is the angular distance between the Moon and the Sun, divided into 30 parts; Nakshatra is the Moon's position among 27 lunar mansions; Yoga is derived from the combined longitudes of Sun and Moon; Karana is half a Tithi. All four therefore come from computed positions for your date and location, which is why each has a precise end time rather than lasting a whole calendar day.

Choghadiya divides daylight and night into eight parts each, from actual sunrise and sunset, and Hora assigns each hour to a planet in a fixed sequence starting from the weekday's ruler.

What the timings mean

Amrit, Shubh and Labh Choghadiya are traditionally treated as favourable, Char as generally workable, and Rog, Kaal and Udveg as better avoided for new beginnings. Hora is commonly matched to the task: Jupiter for study and finance, Venus for celebration, Mercury for communication.

These are customary preferences for scheduling, commonly used for choosing when to start something. They are not a statement that an activity will succeed or fail.

Common misconceptions

“An inauspicious slot means the day is ruined.”

Traditional practice treats these as preferences for beginnings, not as verdicts on a whole day. Most days contain several favourable slots.

“Panchang is the same everywhere in India.”

Sunrise and sunset differ by longitude and latitude, so Choghadiya and Hora genuinely differ between cities. Always select your own city.

Frequently asked questions

What is Panchang?+

Panchang means 'five limbs' — Tithi (lunar day), Vaar (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga and Karana. Together they describe the quality of a day in the Vedic calendar.
