Few questions are asked of Indian astrologers more often than whether a chart shows a government job. Behind it usually sits years of preparation, family expectation and the uncertainty of competitive examinations. That is exactly why the question deserves an honest answer about what a chart can and cannot show.
What a chart can do is describe temperament and timing. The 10th house from your Lagna is the house of career and public standing, and its lord shows where your work energy is directed. The Sun is the karaka of authority and the state; Saturn is the karaka of service, rules and long, steady effort. A chart in which these factors are strong and connected is traditionally read as suited to structured, rule-based or public work.
What a chart cannot do is tell you the result of a specific examination. Selection depends on seats, cut-offs, the paper on the day and your preparation. A reading that promises a selection is promising something no chart contains.
The combinations astrologers look for
Most descriptions of a government job yog draw on a small set of classical indications. A Sun that is strong by sign or house, especially in or connected to the 10th house. A 10th lord related to the Sun, or placed in a house linked to service. Saturn well placed, which is read as the capacity for disciplined, long-tenure work. And a 6th house that supports competition, since most government posts in India are reached through competitive examinations.
Jupiter's involvement is often read as favouring roles connected with teaching, law, advisory or judicial work, and Mars's involvement as favouring the uniformed services, engineering or administration that needs decisiveness. These are tendencies described in the tradition, not job allocations.
No single factor decides the matter. A strong Sun with a weak 10th house tells a different story from a strong 10th house with a weak Sun, and both are read together with the Dasamsa (D10), the divisional chart used for career.
Timing: when the matter becomes active
As with every life question in Vedic astrology, timing comes from two layers. The Vishottari Dasha, fixed at birth, describes which planet's period you are running. Transits, especially of Saturn and Jupiter over the 10th house, describe the slower outer weather.
A period ruled by the 10th lord, the Sun or a planet connected to the 10th house is usually read as the stretch in which career matters become active. Saturn's transit over the 10th house is traditionally associated with responsibility and slow, earned progress; Jupiter's transit over it with recognition and opportunity.
In practical terms, this is how a chart is most useful to an aspirant: as a way of seeing which years are traditionally more supportive for effort and attempts, so that planning and preparation are aligned with them.
Using a reading sensibly
If you are preparing for an examination, a supportive period is a reason to give your best attempt in that window, not a reason to prepare less. A less supportive period is a reason for patience and steady preparation, not a verdict that the goal is closed.
It is also worth separating two questions that often get merged: whether your chart suits structured, public work, and whether you will clear a particular exam this year. The first is a question about temperament that a chart can speak to. The second is not.
Remedies traditionally suggested for a weak Sun or Saturn, such as offering water to the Sun at sunrise or reciting the Aditya Hridayam, are practices of discipline and steadiness. They support your effort; they do not replace it.
What an astrologer actually looks at
- 10th house and its lord
- Career, public standing and the direction of your work, counted from your Lagna. Its condition and the placement of its lord form the base of any career reading.
- The Sun
- Karaka of authority, the state and those who hold office. A strong Sun, or one connected to the 10th house, is the classical indication of government or administrative work.
- Saturn
- Karaka of service, rules and long tenure. Saturn's strength is read for the capacity to sustain disciplined, structured work over many years.
- 6th house
- Service, competition and overcoming rivals. Read for salaried employment and for competitive examinations.
- Dasamsa (D10) chart
- The divisional chart traditionally read for career. Used to confirm or qualify what the main chart suggests.
- Running Dasha and Antardasha
- The fixed timing layer from birth. Periods ruled by the 10th lord, the Sun or Saturn are when career matters are read as active.
- Saturn and Jupiter transits over the 10th
- The slower outer timing layer: Saturn for earned responsibility, Jupiter for recognition and opportunity.

Methodology & limitations
Every chart on AskJeevanGuru is calculated from the birth date, exact birth time and birth place you enter, using the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri Ayanamsa — the standard used in Indian Vedic astrology. Timing indications come from the Vishottari Dasha sequence and from current planetary transits, not from a fixed rulebook.
An unknown or rounded birth time is the single biggest limitation. The Lagna (ascendant) changes roughly every two hours, and most of the houses discussed on this page are measured from it, so an approximate time gives an approximate reading. Where your time is uncertain, treat house-based statements as indicative only.
Astrology here is used for reflection and planning, never as a substitute for medical, legal, financial or professional advice, and never as a guaranteed forecast. Nothing on this page describes your chart specifically — it explains what is looked at, so you can read your own chart with more context.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a specific 'government job yog' in the Kundli?+
Not one single combination. Astrologers use the phrase for a group of indications that point towards stable, rule-based or state service: a strong Sun, a 10th house connected to the Sun or Saturn, a 6th house that supports service and competition, and a running Dasha that activates these. It is a pattern read across the chart, not a switch that is either on or off.
Can a chart tell me whether I will clear UPSC, SSC or a bank exam?+
No. A chart can describe periods that are traditionally considered supportive for effort, competition and recognition. Whether you clear a particular exam depends on preparation, the number of seats, the paper and many factors no chart contains. Treat a supportive period as a reason to plan your attempts, not as a result.
Why is the Sun so important for government service?+
In Vedic astrology the Sun is the karaka of authority, the state and those who hold office. A well-placed Sun, or one connected to the 10th house or its lord, is the classical indication of work linked to government or administration. Saturn adds the qualities of public service, rules and long tenure.
What does the 6th house have to do with jobs?+
The 6th house is the house of service, competition and overcoming rivals. In the Indian context it is read for salaried employment and for competitive examinations, where the task is literally to do better than other candidates. A 6th house that supports effort is read as helpful for exam-based selection.
Which free tools here show these factors?+
The free Kundli shows your 10th and 6th houses and where the Sun and Saturn sit, the Dasha calculator shows which periods run now and next with dates, and the divisional charts page shows the Dasamsa (D10), the chart traditionally read for career.
