Festival dates follow the Indian calendar day. Where a festival is observed by local sunrise, the date in this city can shift by one day.

Why Panchang timings in New Delhi differ from other Indian cities

The five limbs of Panchang — Tithi, Vaar, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana — come from the positions of the Sun and Moon, but the "day" they belong to starts at local sunrise. New Delhi uses IST, but its local sunrise affects auspicious time windows compared with other Indian cities.

New Delhi sits at its own latitude and longitude, so its sunrise differs from other Indian cities by several minutes — and Rahu Kaal, Abhijit and Choghadiya all move with it.

The Asia/Kolkata zone does not observe daylight saving, so the offset from India is the same all year.

How to use these timings

Rahu Kaal is one of eight equal parts of daylight and moves with the weekday. New work, purchases and the start of a journey are traditionally avoided inside it.

Abhijit Muhurat is a short favourable window around local noon, taken from the eighth of fifteen equal parts of the daylight period.

Choghadiya splits day and night into eight slots each; Amrit, Shubh and Labh are treated as favourable, and Rog, Kaal and Udveg are usually avoided for a new beginning.

What time zone is the New Delhi Panchang calculated in?+

New Delhi local time (Asia/Kolkata), which is the same clock time as India. The date shown is this city's calendar day.

How is Rahu Kaal calculated for New Delhi?+

Sunrise to sunset in New Delhi is divided into eight equal parts, and one part per weekday belongs to Rahu. It is arithmetic on local sunrise, not a guess.

Will festival dates be the same as in India?+

Most festivals are stated on the Indian Panchang day. Where a vrat is observed from local sunrise, the date in New Delhi can fall a day either side — so we say which basis we are using rather than hiding it.
