Porutham — South Indian Star Matching

Dasha Porutham, Rajju-Vedha and Papasamyam from both birth charts.

In South Indian tradition, compatibility is read as a set of agreements — poruthams — between two birth stars. Ten are usually checked, each looking at a different part of married life: temperament, health, prosperity, understanding.

Very few pairs match on all ten, and that is normal. Read this as a description of where the match flows easily and where it will simply need more conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What is Porutham?+

Porutham is the South Indian method of marriage matching. Instead of the 36-point Ashtakoot used in the north, it checks ten agreements — called poruthams — between the two birth stars and Moon signs, such as Dinam, Gana, Rasi and Yoni.

How many poruthams should agree?+

Traditionally five or more out of ten is considered workable, with Dinam, Gana, Yoni, Rasi and Rasiathipathi treated as the more important ones. Very few couples match on all ten.

What is Rajju and Vedha?+

Rajju groups the 27 stars into bands; the same Rajju for both partners is traditionally avoided. Vedha refers to star pairs considered to obstruct each other. Both are checked separately from the ten poruthams.

What is Papasamyam?+

Papasamyam compares the malefic load — mainly Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — in both charts. The idea is balance: similar loads are considered better matched than one very light and one very heavy chart.

Should a low score stop a marriage?+

No. Traditional astrologers read the whole chart, the Dasha periods and the family situation before advising anything, and remedies are commonly suggested. Treat this as one input for a conversation, not a verdict.
