Engagement muhurat — candidate days for sagai or roka

Prepared and maintained by AskJeevanGuru Vedic Research & Editorial Desk.

We keep days whose Nakshatra is one of Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha or Revati, whose Tithi avoids Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya, and which fall on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. The Venus and Jupiter combustion exclusions that shrink the wedding calendar are generally not applied to an engagement, which is why dates exist here when none exist for vivah.

Days ahead that clear the engagement filters, with the reason each day passed or failed

New Delhi · 2026-10-22 – 2026-10-25 · 4 days checked

These dates follow the traditional guidance that is commonly published for this occasion. Astrologers and regional traditions differ, and a muhurat chosen for you personally also considers your own birth chart. Treat this as an indicative shortlist and confirm the final date with your priest or family astrologer.

A date is kept only when the day's Nakshatra is one of the eight commonly listed for a betrothal, the Tithi avoids Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya, and the weekday is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. The Venus and Jupiter combustion exclusions that shrink the marriage calendar so sharply are generally NOT applied to an engagement, which is why engagement dates exist in months where no vivah muhurat does.

We have panchang data for 4 of the next 30 days for New Delhi, up to 2026-10-25. Later dates are not listed yet — we only show days we have actually checked.

Why engagement is easier to place than marriage

A betrothal is a promise, not the ritual that establishes the marriage, so most traditions apply a lighter rule set: no combustion suspension, no Chaturmas bar in many communities, and no fixed-lagna requirement. If your family wants a ceremony in a month with no wedding dates, an engagement usually still fits.

Roka, sagai and tilak

Communities name and stage this differently: a roka is often an informal agreement between families, sagai the ring ceremony, tilak a groom-side ritual. The filters here are the general betrothal filters; if your community treats the ceremony as closer to a wedding rite, use the stricter marriage rules instead.

What to check anyway

Even with lighter rules, families usually avoid Amavasya and the Tithis listed above, and prefer a weekday whose lord suits the occasion — Thursday and Friday are common. If both charts are already matched, that discussion is separate from the date and belongs with kundli matching.

Limits

Our rule set for this occasion is unreviewed by a practitioner and the page states that. Only cached days are evaluated, so the horizon is short and never an annual list. A day clearing the filters is a candidate to discuss, not a verified muhurat.

Frequently asked questions

Can an engagement happen when there is no marriage muhurat?+

Usually yes. The combustion exclusions that block vivah are generally not applied to a betrothal.

Is a roka date chosen the same way as sagai?+

Communities differ. A roka is often informal; sagai is more commonly given a muhurat.

Do we need kundli matching before the engagement?+

Many families do it first. It is a separate step from choosing the date.

Is this a verified muhurat?+

No. It is an indicative shortlist from unreviewed rules; a practitioner should confirm the final choice.
