Pitra Dosha puja and mantra: tarpan, shraddha and Amavasya practice

The traditional Pitra Dosha puja described so a householder can keep it: tarpan with water and sesame, the Gayatri and Pitru mantras, Amavasya offerings and Pitru Paksha shraddha.

Pitra Dosha puja and mantra: tarpan, shraddha and Amavasya practice

The traditional observance is tarpan: facing south in the morning, offering water with black sesame and darbha grass in the name of departed family, then setting aside food for crows, dogs and cows. It is kept on Amavasya and through Pitru Paksha, recited with the Gayatri or a simple Pitru mantra. No priest and no payment are required.

How tarpan is traditionally performed at home

The simple householder form: bathe in the morning, face south, and offer water mixed with black sesame from cupped hands, naming the departed of the paternal and maternal lines as you know them. Darbha grass and a copper vessel are used where available. A portion of the day's cooked food is then set aside for crows, dogs and cows before the family eats.

It is kept on Amavasya, and daily through the Pitru Paksha fortnight. Where the family follows a particular lineage practice, that practice takes precedence over any general description, including this one.

The recitations used

The Gayatri mantra is the most widely used recitation for the occasion. A simple Pitru mantra — Om Pitru Devaya Namah — is used in household practice, and some recite the Pitru Stotra or a Vishnu recitation such as the Vishnu Sahasranama during the fortnight.

As with every remedy on this site, we describe the practice as tradition describes it and attach no guaranteed result to it. Recitation in traditional understanding is an act of remembrance, not a transaction.

Before you pay for an ancestral ritual

Formal shraddha at a traditional site, performed by a priest, is a real and respected practice, and some families will want it. What we object to is the marketing that attaches frightening claims about children, health or family ruin to it, then prices it accordingly.

Confirm whether the placements are even present in your chart with the free calculator, and ask the Guru about your own ninth house if you want the specifics. Neither costs a ritual fee.

If you have never done this before

A first-time version is deliberately plain: bathe, face south, offer water with a pinch of black sesame from your cupped hands while naming the family members you know of on both sides, and then set aside a portion of the day's food before the household eats. That is a complete observance.

You do not need Sanskrit, a priest or a specific vessel to begin, and being unsure of names further back in the line is not an obstacle — tradition provides for naming the line collectively. Ask an older relative what your family does; that answer outranks any general instruction found online.
