What is a Dasha?
The planetary periods that time events.
Vimshottari Dasha divides a 120-year cycle into periods, each ruled by one Graha. The period running now colours what is active in your life.
The order is fixed: Ketu 7 years, Shukra 20, Surya 6, Chandra 10, Mangal 7, Rahu 18, Guru 16, Shani 19, Budh 17. Where you start depends on the Nakshatra the Moon was in at birth.
Each Mahadasha is split into Antardashas (sub-periods), so timing becomes more precise. This is how Vedic astrology speaks about favourable periods.
