What is your ascendant, and how is it calculated?
Your ascendant — Lagna in Vedic astrology, also called the rising sign — is the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. It becomes the 1st house of your Kundli, and every other house is counted from it.
Calculating it needs three inputs: date of birth, exact clock time of birth and birth place. Because the Earth rotates, the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so a birth time that is off by an hour or two can give a different Lagna and shift the whole chart. Date of birth alone cannot produce an ascendant.
The ascendant is not the same as your Moon sign (Rashi) or Sun sign. Vedic predictions and Dasha run from the Moon sign; the ascendant sets the house framework the predictions are read against.
Positions are computed by a Vedic calculation engine using the Lahiri ayanamsa; the interpretation is written around those computed values.

How the calculation works
- 1Enter your date of birth. Give the calendar date you were born, as recorded on your birth certificate or hospital record.
- 2Enter your exact time of birth. Give the clock time as precisely as you know it. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so minutes matter.
- 3Enter your birth place. Pick your city of birth so the calculation uses the correct latitude, longitude and time zone.
- 4Read your Lagna. The rising sign at that exact moment is shown, with a short reading of what that Lagna traditionally indicates.

What your ascendant result means
In traditional Vedic astrology the Lagna is commonly interpreted as your outward approach, physical constitution and the way you meet the world, while the Moon sign describes emotional temperament. Its ruling planet is called the Lagna lord, and the tradition reads that planet's sign, house and condition together with the ascendant itself.
Because the ascendant fixes the first house, it fixes all twelve. That is what makes it structural: change the Lagna and every house-based statement in the chart moves with it, even though sign and Nakshatra findings stay put. A single placement is not sufficient to conclude anything on its own.
Common misconceptions
“My ascendant can be worked out from my date of birth alone.”
It cannot. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so date without clock time and place gives no ascendant at all.
“The ascendant matters more than the Moon sign.”
Traditional practice uses both for different things — the Lagna for house structure, the Moon for predictive timing. Neither replaces the other.
“A particular ascendant is a strong or weak one to be born with.”
We do not rank ascendants. Classical texts attach traditional qualities to each rising sign; none of them is presented here as an advantage or a defect.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Ascendant or Lagna?+
Your Ascendant, or Lagna, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. In Vedic astrology it sets the 1st house of your chart and, from there, the layout of all 12 houses — making it one of the most important points in your entire Kundli.
How do I calculate my ascendant by date of birth?+
Date of birth alone is not enough. The ascendant needs your date of birth, your exact clock time of birth and your birth place, because it depends on the Earth's rotation at that location. Enter all three above and the rising sign is computed for that exact moment.
Why do I need my exact birth time?+
The Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, so even a small error in your recorded birth time can put you in the wrong Lagna and shift every house in your chart. This is the single detail where exact birth time matters most — more than for your Moon or Sun sign.
Can I see my ascendant degree, not just the sign?+
This calculator reports the rising sign. The exact rising degree is part of the full birth chart, which you can generate free from the same details — open your birth charts after your Kundli is calculated and the Lagna degree is shown there.
What is the difference between moon sign and sun sign?+
The Ascendant is different from both — it's about the moment of birth, not just the date. Vedic astrology uses your Moon sign for predictions and horoscopes because the Moon reflects your emotional mind, while Western astrology and newspaper horoscopes use the Sun sign, based only on your birth date. Your Ascendant works alongside your Moon sign to shape your full Vedic chart.
How does the Ascendant affect my personality?+
Where the Sun sign speaks to identity and the Moon sign to emotion, the Ascendant is often described as the 'mask' you present to the world — your outward personality, physical appearance and first impression, as well as the lens through which the rest of your chart is read.
Which sign should I read my horoscope for?+
For a Vedic Kundli reading, all three points matter together: your Ascendant sets your houses, your Moon sign drives predictions and Dasha, and your Sun sign reflects your core identity. If you only have one to read a horoscope by, use your Moon sign for Vedic predictions.
