Sun Sign Calculator

Find your Sun sign — your core identity and ego, based on your birth date.

What is a Sun sign and how is it calculated?

Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun occupied on your birth date. Because the Sun spends about a month in each sign, the date alone is usually enough to determine it. This calculator computes the Sun's longitude for your birth moment and maps it to a sign, so births within a day of a sign change are placed correctly. In Vedic astrology the Sun sign reflects core identity and willpower, while predictions, horoscopes and Dasha timing are taken from the Moon sign instead.

Western and Vedic systems place the Sun differently because Vedic calculation is sidereal; this site uses the Lahiri ayanamsa throughout.

Your Sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was passing through on your birth date. It represents your soul, ego and core identity, and it's the sign most people mean when they casually ask "what's your sign" — the one used in Western astrology and popular horoscope columns.

How a Sun sign is calculated

The Sun's longitude is computed for your birth date, clock time and place, then mapped to one of the twelve signs. The clock time matters only near a boundary: if you were born within about a day of a sign change, the exact moment decides which side of it you fall on.

Western astrology reads the Sun against the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the equinox. Vedic astrology reads it against the sidereal zodiac, measured from fixed stars. The two differ by the ayanamsa, currently about 24 degrees, which is why a Vedic Sun sign is often the previous sign to the Western one.

Sun sign, Moon sign and Ascendant

In traditional Vedic practice the three points answer different questions. The Sun sign is commonly read as core identity, will and vitality. The Moon sign, or Rashi, is read as emotional temperament, and it is the sign from which daily horoscopes, Sade Sati and the Vimshottari Dasha are calculated. The Ascendant, or Lagna, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth, and it sets where the twelve houses begin.

If you are reading a newspaper or app horoscope column, that is a Sun-sign horoscope. For a Vedic reading, look up your Moon sign as well — it is the one the tradition actually predicts from.

What a Sun sign result means

Traditional interpretation treats the Sun as steady rather than situational: it describes an approach and a source of drive, not a mood or a schedule. That is why Sun-sign statements read as broad character notes and not as timing.

A single placement is not sufficient to conclude anything on its own, and nothing here is presented as certain to happen.

Common misconceptions

“My Sun sign is different on this site, so one calculation is wrong.”

Both can be correct in their own system. A sidereal Vedic calculation and a tropical Western one legitimately differ by the ayanamsa; this site is sidereal and internally consistent.

“My Sun sign decides my personality and my future.”

Traditional practice reads the whole chart, and the Moon sign and Ascendant carry much of what people expect from a reading. We do not present any outcome as certain.

“Sun sign and Moon sign should be the same.”

They usually differ. The Sun takes a month to cross a sign while the Moon takes about two and a half days, so the two signs coincide only occasionally.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between moon sign and sun sign?+

Your Sun sign is fixed by your birth date alone and represents your core identity and ego — it's the sign used in Western astrology and in most newspaper horoscope columns. Vedic astrology instead bases its predictions, horoscopes and Dasha timing on your Moon sign (Rashi), which depends on your exact birth date, time and place and can change every two to three days. That's why a Vedic reading of you can differ from what your Sun-sign horoscope says — they're built on two different systems.

Why do I need my exact birth time?+

Your Sun sign itself only needs your birth date, since the Sun stays in one sign for about a month. We ask for your full birth details here so the same profile can also power your Moon sign, Ascendant and full Kundli without asking again.

Which sign should I read my horoscope for?+

If you're reading a Western-style Sun-sign horoscope, magazine column or app, use your Sun sign. For Vedic predictions, remedies, Sade Sati and Dasha periods, your Moon sign is the one that matters.

What does my Sun sign represent?+

The Sun sign reflects your core self, willpower and how you express your identity to the world. It's a steady, lifelong trait rather than something that shifts with mood — different from the Moon sign, which speaks to your emotional, day-to-day inner state.
