Moon Sign Calculator
Find your Rashi — the sign Vedic astrology uses for your predictions.
What is your Moon sign (Rashi) and how is it calculated?
Your Moon sign, or Rashi, is the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth moment. It is the reference point Vedic astrology uses for daily predictions, Vimshottari Dasha, Sade Sati and Kundli matching — not the Sun sign used by Western horoscope columns. Because the Moon crosses a sign in about two and a quarter days, the calculation needs your birth date, clock time and place to place it correctly, especially for births near a sign change.
Positions use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which is why a Vedic Moon sign can differ from a tropical-zodiac result elsewhere.
Your Moon sign, or Rashi, is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. In Vedic astrology it represents your emotional mind and inner nature, and it is the sign your daily horoscope, Dasha periods and most predictions are actually based on — unlike the Sun sign used in Western astrology.

What the Moon sign is
The Moon sign is one of the twelve zodiac divisions, fixed by where the Moon was rather than where the Sun was. In traditional Vedic astrology it is read as the mind and emotional temperament, and it anchors most of the predictive machinery: Dasha starts from the Moon's Nakshatra, Sade Sati is measured from the Moon sign, and Ashtakoot matching compares two Moon signs and Nakshatras.
It is not the same as your Nakshatra. The Nakshatra is a finer division — one of 27 lunar mansions — inside the same Moon position.
How it is calculated
Your birth place is resolved to latitude, longitude and timezone so the clock time becomes a real instant. The engine computes the Moon's sidereal longitude for that instant using the Lahiri ayanamsa, then maps it to one of the twelve 30° signs.
The Moon moves roughly 13° a day, so it can change sign within a single date. A birth time that is off by a few hours can therefore return the neighbouring Rashi — which is the one thing worth double-checking before reading anything into the result.
What your Moon sign means
In traditional Vedic astrology the Moon sign is commonly interpreted as emotional temperament and habitual response, while the ascendant describes outward approach and the Sun sign core drive. Rashifal and Dasha readings on this site are built from the Moon sign for exactly that reason.
A single placement is not sufficient to conclude anything about a person. The Moon sign is a starting point that the rest of the chart qualifies.
Common misconceptions
“My Moon sign should match the sign I always call mine.”
The sign most people know is their Sun sign, and it is usually different. Both are valid within their own system — Vedic predictions use the Moon.
“Some Moon signs are luckier than others.”
We do not rank signs, and no Rashi is described here as fortunate or unfortunate. Traditional texts attach qualities, not verdicts.
“Birth time does not matter for a Moon sign.”
It can matter decisively. Around a sign change the Moon sign shifts within hours, so an approximate time can produce the wrong Rashi.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between moon sign and sun sign?+
Vedic astrology uses your Moon sign (Rashi) as the base for predictions, daily horoscopes and Dasha periods, because the Moon reflects your mind and emotional patterns and moves through a sign every two to three days. Western astrology, and most newspaper horoscopes, use your Sun sign instead, which is tied only to your birth date and changes once a month. This is exactly why a Vedic Rashi reading about you can feel more accurate than the generic Sun-sign horoscope you read online — they are calculated from two different points in your chart.
Why do I need my exact birth time?+
The Moon moves roughly 13 degrees a day, so it can shift from one sign to the next within the same day. Without an accurate birth time, the calculation can land you in the wrong Rashi, especially if you were born close to a sign change. Even a difference of a couple of hours can matter.
Which sign should I read my horoscope for?+
For Vedic predictions, Dasha timing, Sade Sati and remedies, use your Moon sign. If you're comparing notes with a Western friend or reading a Sun-sign horoscope column, use your Sun sign instead — both are valid, they just belong to different systems.
Can my moon sign be different from my sun sign?+
Yes, almost always. Your Sun sign depends only on your birth date, while your Moon sign depends on your exact birth date, time and place. It's common — and completely normal — for the two to be different signs.
Is my moon sign the same as my Nakshatra?+
No. Your Moon sign (Rashi) is one of 12 zodiac divisions the Moon was in at your birth. Your Nakshatra is a finer division — one of 27 lunar mansions — within that sign. Both come from the Moon's position but serve different purposes in a reading.
